Fund Managers
Barnabas Foundation utilizes professional investment management firms to manage the assets in the Common Trust Fund. Since we can combine the assets of our donors and members in the Common Trust Fund, we have the ability to work with nationally-recognized investment management firms at competitive fee levels. Our highly-qualified investment committee, along with Merrill Lynch as fund custodian, oversees our investment managers. We believe that these carefully selected partnerships will ultimately benefit both our donors and our member organizations.

Equity

AllianceBernstein - Growth Fund

AllianceBernstein Holding L.P. is one of the largest investment managers in the US, with over $500 billion in assets under management. Large Cap Growth, one of the firm's flagship services, seeks to deliver long-term capital appreciation by investing in companies with superior sustainable earnings growth and reasonable valuations that don’t fully reflect their prospective earnings growth. It builds portfolios around a core of 25-40 stocks, adjusting both portfolio risk and each stock's weight to optimize long-term performance. Their investment process emphasizes bottom-up stock selection with the goal of buying companies with one to three year relative earnings strength that results from excellent management and a long-term competitive advantage.

Lord Abbett - Value Fund

Founded in 1929, Lord Abbett is an independent money management firm structured as a partnership. Currently, Lord Abbett manages over $110 billion in assets representing separately managed equity, fixed income, and balanced portfolios for institutional accounts, in addition to a family of mutual funds and wrap fee assets.

Lord Abbett manages approximately $30 billion in large cap value equity assets, including assets managed for Barnabas Foundation. Lord Abbett strongly believes that its multidimensional investment approach, a combination of quantitative and fundamental research elements, provides the firm with a source of competitive advantage.

MFS - International

MFS manages the core international allocation. The strategy is managed by a team of MFS equity analysts located around the globe from a diverse background. The fund is designed to be broadly diversified by sector with the flexibility to invest across regions, industries, styles and market capitalizations.

MFS established the first mutual fund in the United States in 1924. With its invention, the firm helped make the U.S stock market, previously the exclusive domain of the wealthy, accessible to the average investor. Today, that commitment to putting investors first remains evident in everything about the firm.

NFJ - International

NFJ Investment Group, a division of Allianz Global Investors, manages a value portion of the international allocation. NFJ employs a deep value equity investment style that focuses on dividends, discipline and diversification. Over the years, the firm's strict adherence to this approach has helped it to deliver consistent results for investors with lower-than-average risk.

In the International Value Strategy portfolio, managers adhere to a strict value discipline, seeking fundamentally sound foreign companies that are seen as undervalued. They employ a disciplined investment process that combines quantitative stock screening with fundamental research. They seek to invest primarily in dividend-paying stocks of non-U.S. companies (generally ADRs); while these stocks are subject to higher risk than domestic stocks, they have historically offered higher dividend yields. The strategy’s ability to invest up to 50% in emerging markets provides the managers with the flexibility to evaluate higher risk/reward candidates.

Wentworth - International

A portion of the international portfolio is managed by Wentworth, Hauser and Violich. The investment philosophy is grounded in the conviction that superior investment performance depends primarily on investing in the most attractive global economic sectors. WHV utilizes a top-down sector allocation strategy to generate superior performance. First, the relative attractiveness of 10 global economic sectors is analyzed. Second, the potential of 67 industry groups is examined. Third, the attractiveness of 51 countries is analyzed. Fourth, our universe of 700 foreign equity securities is researched. Lastly, a portfolio of 30 to 60 stocks is constructed, representing primarily economic sectors that have the potential to deliver superior long-term earnings growth.

For seven decades, Wentworth, Hauser and Violich has provided a disciplined approach to investing with a focus on preserving capital and structuring high-quality diversified portfolios that generate strong, risk-adjusted returns over time.

Tradewinds - Small to Mid Cap Equity Fund

Tradewinds is a division of Nuveen Investments and is focused on identifying hidden value anywhere in the world and realizing those opportunities for their clients. Tradewinds manages over $20 billion in value assets and over $2.5 billion in the small/mid cap strategy. The small/mid cap value portfolio uses a rigorous bottom-up research approach to identify undervalued companies with strong and/or improving franchise quality. The portfolios are diversified across 40-60 companies representing strong risk/return characteristics. Convertible bonds and ADRs can be up to 20% of the strategy.
