It was a very emotional moment for Marv and Jean Rozenboom. Jean climbed into the "buddy" seat of Marv's combine last fall, and together, they harvested the last strip of grain on the farm they bought on a shoestring 47 years ago. When they reached the end of the row, Jean recalls, "We just sat there and praised the Lord."

Although the decision to stop farming was not an easy one, the Rozenbooms approached this moment with a spirit of joyful anticipation. Last spring, Marv and Jean reached the same conclusion over the breakfast table during their morning devotions. "At that point we were still planting crops," Jean remembers, "but we just looked at each other, and a joint revelation flashed right in front of us that morning."

They felt God leading them to turn the farm equipment over to Him at the end of the harvest season. "For us it was a heart decision. Giving [our business] to the Lord was the most blessed way to depart a long term career without feeling we really gave anything up. It took on a whole new meaning."

By July, the Rozenbooms contacted Barnabas Foundation to discuss their options. "Barnabas Foundation can help you look at the total picture and make expert suggestions for [gift] planning of any type," Jean observed. In the end, the Rozenbooms decided to transfer the ownership of their farm equipment to Barnabas Foundation, who would then sell the equipment at an auction. "[Selling the equipment ourselves] would have meant a big tax consequence," Jean reports. "This way, the Lord gets to use 100%."

The auction itself was a day of celebration for the Rozenbooms. "The Lord blessed the day with 70 degree weather," Jean recalls. "Our children and grandchildren were there - we had a few tears, and a lot of laughs." At the end of the day, the proceeds from the farm equipment exceeded the Rozenboom's most optimistic projections. 

"This was a family offering," Jean says. "Our children were very glad we were doing this. When we told them what we wished to do [with the sale of the farm equipment], they said, 'Goodness, yes! Do it! Go for it!'" The kingdom impact of the sale will go on for many years to come. The proceeds from the auction were placed into a Barnabas Foundation Stewards Fund. A portion of the funds will support Christian education, with the remainder being distributed to Christian charities dear to Marv and Jean's heart. 

 With the sale of the farm equipment behind them, the Rozenbooms are now serving the Lord with gladness, offering their time and talents to ministries such as the Christian Reformed World Relief Committee's Disaster Response Service (CRWRC-DRS).

Looking back on the transaction that made this new chapter of kingdom service possible, Jean says, "Barnabas Foundation gives people ideas in a gentle manner, helping people like us to give back to God with all of our hearts. And for that we say, 'Thank you God, you've been so good!'"
